Songwriter Ben Hayslip takes top ASCAP 2011 songwriting honors

Songwriter Ben Hayslip was the night’s top winner, collecting his first ASCAP Songwriter of the Year Award on Sunday night during the performing rights organization’s 49th annual country awards.
Hayslip had a hand in writing five of ASCAP’s most-performed songs in the last year: “All About Tonight” (Blake Shelton), “All Over Me” (Josh Turner); “Farmer’s Daughter” (Rodney Atkins), “Gimme That Girl” (Josh Nichols) and “The Shape I’m In” (Joe Nichols).
“It’s unbelievable, it really is,” Hayslip says of landing five hits in one year. “I dreamed of being a lot of things in my life, from an NFL quarterback to a songwriter, but I don’t think I ever dreamed of having five hit songs in a year. Maybe I didn’t think it was possible.”

A lot of album projects get shelved in Nashville, but one rarely has a comeback like Shawn Camp’s 1994 Warner Bros. project.
Shawn Camp is a Nashville songwriter whos had more success than most. He’s released five albums of his own, and country music stars such as Garth Brooks, Josh Turner and George Strait have turned his songs into Top 10 hits. Sixteen years ago, Camp had his own shot at country music stardom, but his second album was shelved — until now.

Grand Ole Opry officials today announced that the show, displaced from its permanent home due to May’s historic Nashville flood, will return to the Grand Ole Opry House with a star-packed show Tues., Sept. 28. Among the artists scheduled for the show are Trace Adkins, Jason Aldean, Dierks Bentley, Charlie Daniels Band, Diamond Rio, Jimmy Dickens, Del McCoury Band, Montgomery Gentry, Brad Paisley, Blake Shelton, Mel Tillis and Josh Turner.
